Navigating with a moral compass
Co-ops are a cornerstone of Singapore's social compact. For a nation to progress, its ecosystem needs diverse players, such as commercial entities, charities, the government, and community-driven co-ops. The co-operative model, with its human-to-human approach, tackles complex community issues in a more sustainable and empathetic way.
As a community-driven Movement, the collective strength and wisdom of individuals and leaders are essential. If we are willing, able, and ready to face new challenges, we can truly transform as a Movement and make a greater impact on the community.
In times of crisis, making tough and meaningful decisions for the benefit of members and the community requires a moral compass. I have seen co-op leaders who prioritise ethical decisions, even when faced with crises or when workers’ jobs are at stake. The true values and principles of an organisation shine during such moments, and I am proud to have witnessed co-ops making morally right decisions that benefit both their members and Singapore.
As a community-driven model, co-ops move forward together, ensuring no one is left behind. During decision-making, they don’t just look at what is commercially the right thing to do, but also what is the morally right thing to do.
