On Friday, 23 September, six SNCF staff participated in the community tree planting event by the National Parks Board (NParks) as part of the OneMillionTrees movement at East Coast Park. The tree planting initiative was an extension of SNCF’s ESG effort to support the Climate Action Week 2022, organised by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment from 19 to 25 September 2022.
Launched in April 2020 by NParks, the OneMillionTrees movement is a decade-long initiative to plant a million trees across Singapore, bringing the total number of trees on the nation to a whopping eight million. This movement is an integral part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 which aims to improve the nation's urban environment and enhance Singapore’s resilience towards climate change. In supporting the initiative and contributing to the national sustainability development target, SNCF staff planted a total of eight trees, consisting of four selected species such as Melaleuca cajuputi Powell (Paper Bark Tree), Knema globularia (Small Leave Nutmeg), Tristaniopsis merguensis (Hill Tristania), and Ormosia pinnata (Lour.) Merr.
As of this writing, almost 400,000 trees have been planted in schools, residential and industrial estates around Singapore. SNCF understands that each tree was manually planted and no machinery was used, not even to dig the soil.
Climate change has brought about fretful concerns to our planet, SNCF would like to call upon all co-operatives to contribute and do our part to preserve Earth. You may choose to join NParks and participate in any of their upcoming initiatives to secure a sustainable future for Singapore!
