On a vibrant Friday evening on 16 August 2024, the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) organised the third annual Co-op Movement Night at the Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. Themed “A Toast to Our Leaders”, the evening brought together over 300 co-operators and guests to celebrate and honour the changemakers in Singapore’s co-operative sector who have created meaningful impact to the society.

The evening commenced on a high note with a performance by former Singapore Idol finalist Ms Mathilda D’Silva, who delivered a heartfelt rendition of “You Raise Me Up” by Secret Garden. The tribute was a nod to all the leaders who have uplifted others, providing hope, strength, and encouragement to those around them.

Welcome Address: Hindsight, Insight, Foresight

In his welcome address, SNCF CEO, Mr Ang Hin Kee, offered three key perspectives to co-operators: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight.

  • Hindsight: Co-op leaders have generously shared their experiences and learnings, providing us valuable insights without the need to undergo the same challenges. This hindsight sharing is something to treasure.
  • Insight: Co-op leaders are able to identify emerging issues and also delve deeply into the underlying causes and thought processes behind them. Some of these leaders chose the co-op model over an unregulated "social enterprise" because of the benefits of regulation. Properly calibrated regulations provide assurance to members and demonstrate the co-op's commitment to governance. The resilience of the co-op governance regime is something to appreciate.
  • Foresight: As we look to the future, it is important to allow newer and emerging leaders to serve and build upon the strong foundation laid by past and present co-op leaders. Co-operatives are in capable hands, with leadership approaching the 100-year milestone with confidence and the assurance. This will ensure co-ops continue to see far and serve the community for years to come.

Sustainability: Where Are We Today?

Special Guest Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Ministry of Trade and Industry Mr Alvin Tan provided an update on the Central Co-operative Fund (CCF) Sustainability Grant. Thus far, 19 co-ops have taken their first steps in utilising the grant to embark on their sustainability journeys. He encouraged more co-op leaders and officers to participate in the upcoming sustainability training sessions by the Singapore University of Social Sciences, scheduled for . SNCF is also arranging a sustainability-themed learning journey, specially curated for co-ops.

$1M Fund to Empower Co-ops to Kickstart Community Initiatives

Mr Tan also announced that a $1 million Empowering Communities Fund (ECF) will be set up by the SNCF and the Registry of Co-operative Societies, with support from the Central Co-operative Fund (CCF) Committee and the Government. Co-ops looking to kickstart ground-up initiatives or programmes that benefit the communities can tap on the fund for partial funding support. The ECF is set to officially launch in early 2025, with more details to be shared in the coming months.

48 Leaders from 24 Co-ops Recognised

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of 48 outstanding leaders from 24 unique co-ops.

These leaders were celebrated for their significant contributions to the Singapore Co-operative Movement and the wider community. Hailing from the different co-operative sectors, these leaders have demonstrated strong leadership and innovative thinking, drove impactful community-driven initiatives, and led their co-ops' sustainable growth.

“Next year marks a significant milestone—100 years of the Singapore Co-operative Movement. A century of effort, engagement, and bettering lives. But this is just the beginning. With our visionary leaders, I'm confident we'll continue to achieve great things together. Let's give a big round of applause to our leaders for their dedication and support,” shared   participant Ms Karuna Kemmu during the evening’s toasting ceremony.

A Night of Strong Co-operative Spirit

The evening concluded with a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration. Attendees participated in a series of fun games, including a singing contest and a best-dressed competition that had everyone on their feet. The strong co-operative spirit was evident throughout, making it a truly memorable night for all.
